Officer Safety

There is probably nothing more important to you and your family than going home each night in one piece. Field or Institution, officer safety -having a safe shift- is a primary goal for all. The department dictates certain protocols to be used in given situations. Bullet proof and stab proof vests are there for field and institutional officers to take advantage of, along with two-way radios, cell phones and OC spray.

Many deputies scorn the efforts of their department in officer safety saying it isn't enough. And, although the department's views of safety issues may different from your own, it can only benefit you to take what the department has to offer. It is your responsibility to make sure that all equipment issued to you is in operating order. It is also your responsibility to use all of the equipment available properly. So, make sure you are familiar with the equipment you use.

It is also important for you to report all broken or worn equipment. You should do so in writing and make sure you follow up. If the equipment is not pulled immediately by supervision and replaced with properly operating equipment, notify your OCEA representative right away so that your Association can pursue the matter.

Many recent attempts have been made to limit your ability to protect yourself off duty. Remember that your department may not limit your statutorily authorized right to carry a firearm off duty. Department heads may attempt to limit your off-duty carry through policy or procedure. However, those policies are null and void on their face. For more information regarding your right to carry a firearm off duty, contact Jeff Gallagher at jkgallag@pacbell.net. Update

The State Coalition of Probation Organizations (SCOPO) has a standing committee that addresses the issue of both on and off duty arming. They are currently working on legislation to mandate conditions for on duty carry by probation peace officers.
